The three NCaect 2006 Grant winners each received $2500 toward an innovative, challenging, student-focused projects. Rocky Mount’s Williford Elementary Technology Facilitator, Christopher L. Shearer, will be using Podcast with Pre-K through fifth grades to improve literacy with phonics instruction in the lower grades and various units of study in their classrooms. They are purchasing microphones, I river mp3 players, licenses for recording software, and rechargeable batteries. Further information can be obtained by contacting CCShearer@nrms.k12.nc.us. Union Hill Elementary School’s in High Point Media Specialist, Tammy S. Gruer is hard at work on her grant project using digital cameras, Powerpoint, LCD projector, and CPS (funded elsewhere) to answer riddles about the slide presented in the school’s second grade class. Melissa Mckeown, a Primary-One Teacher at John Lawrence Elementary School in Archdale, is using this grant to create a balanced literacy classroom that incorporates technology into reading writing, listening and speaking skills for young children. The children will be recording their own voices reading and a digital camera will be used to teach sequencing and story elements. Melissa will be creating a page in the school’s website called Virtual Field Trips. She has purchased Kid Pix, Kidspiration, Lintor Publishing Kits, headphones, Walkman and even a dedicated desktop computer to complete this project.
